Puttur is a town in Dakshina Kannada district, in Karnataka state of India. It is the headquarters of the Puttur Taluk. The town is located 52 km from Mangalore, along the Mysore-Mangalore highway, in a hilly region between the coast and the Western Ghats. Puttur is the second biggest town of the Dakshina Kannada district and also rewarded as the rich town of the district. Stories behind the name Puttur There is a story behind the name Puttur. It is believed that Puttur got its name after "Mutthu" (Pearl in kannada language), means "Mutthur", a place of pearls. Slowly Muttur was renamed itself to Puttur.



As per the mythology, because of draught at this place, priests were performing rituals offering rice as prasadam in the Holy pond of Mahalingeshwara temple, suddenly the water started coming from all the corners and those rice turned into the pearls. Beeramale Hill is an attractive tourism spot of Puttur. The height of the Hill is around 1000 feet from the Sea Level. An open auditorium, a library are open to public.
